Week 3 Assignment # 3 CAST UDL

Part 2

Lesson link: http://lessonbuilder.cast.org/explore.php?op=static&pid=rocks_1

Lesson Title: Rocks and Their Properties: Day 1

Who
The lesson I chose from the CAST UDL website is a 3rd-5th grade science lesson that is designed to engage students in cooperative research projects with the end result of learning about the properties of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks and the processes that form them. The lesson is well designed with a variety of options for students to communicate their new knowledge through a variety of platforms ( written, oral, or visual presentation, explanations, word process) and maximize their performance.

What
Upon delving into the lesson, it became evident to me that the students will explore samples of the three rock types, share their findings, and determine what other types of information they will need as they further their study of rocks. The lesson is aligned with the Massachusetts State Standards for Science and Technology/Engineering, Strand 1: Earth and Space Science and comprises of unit. Furthermore, the lesson goals are broken up into unit goals and lesson goals. I really lived the engagement activity('thumb's up–thumb's down') that was used to arouse students' curiosity and heighten their expectations about what they will learn about rocks.

How
Because the lesson is in its initial stage, only formative assessments will be used to check students understanding and clear up any misconceptions. Whole class instruction, small group , think pair and share will be used to identify students who may seem confused and may need more guidance over the next few days as the lesson progresses.

Week 3 Assignment # 3 UDL

Part 1
What is Universal Design for Learning (UDL)?

Universal design for learning (UDL) is a set of principles for designing and customizing curriculum that provides all individuals with equal opportunities to learn, regardless of ability, disability, age, gender, or cultural and linguistic background. At its core, UDL provides a blueprint for designing strategies, materials, assessments, and tools to reach and teach students with diverse needs. The teachers are tasked with designing learning experiences and environments that meet the needs of individual learners, through flexible means, methods, and materials. UDL reduces the barriers to instruction and helps meet the challenges of diversity by recommending the use of flexible instructional materials, techniques, and strategies that empower educators to meet students'. UDL has allowed us as teachers seeking ways to differentiate instruction to shift our thinking away from categorizing our students toward planning for their inevitable and variable needs.

Week 1 Assignment # 4 ISTE Review

ISTE Review and Reflection

The purpose of education is to ensure student learning to the maximum, but for many years learning has been marked by a students ability to regurgitate what was told to him/ her. The learning environment is technology rich as never before, a trend that is only accelerating. So, educators around the world are trying to get rid of such a system by transforming teaching and learning through technology and adherence to the ISTE Standards. The learning environment is technology rich as never before, a trend that is only accelerating. The ISTE Standards, formerly known as the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS), are standards for the use of technology in teaching and learning (technology integration). They include the ISTE Standards for Students, which list skills and attitudes expected of students. The ISTE Standards for Students are designed to empower student voice and ensure that learning is a student-driven process of exploration, creativity and discovery no matter where they or their teachers are in the thoughtful integration of ed tech. Some of the skills

Effective teachers model and apply the ISTE Standards for Students (Standards•S) as they design, implement, and assess learning experiences to engage students and improve learning; enrich professional practice; and provide positive models for students, colleagues, and the community. Every teacher is expected to meet, master and exemplify five strategic standards and performance indicators. These include: Facilitating and inspiring student learning and creativity, Designing and developing digital age learning experiences and assessments, Modelling digital age work and learning, Promoting and modelling digital citizenship and responsibility, and Engaging in professional growth and leadership.

As an educator my belief is that these standards are very helpful for students because they are geared to empower student voice and ensure that learning is a student-driven process. Moreover, it helps them find meaning and motivation in their work which further makes them feel capable, confident, and prepared. Also, it requires students to think critically about being caretakers of their permanent online reputations, make positive behavior choices, respect intellectual property rights, and how they can be safe online and keep their personal data secure. Furthermore, this tool seeks to help build students' research skills and how they view sources of information with a more critical eye. Students are thus prepared to create curated collections that represent the forging of connections and drawing of conclusions that build an accurate base of knowledge. They are also engaged in the design cycle of developing, testing, and refining prototypical models, and learn to live with the open-ended, chaotic, ambiguous world of complex problem-solving. developing logical descriptions of problems and using the appropriate edtech tools to break down, analyze, and solve them. All students must learn the essential skill of communicating their ideas and how to use varied edtech tools to meet their individual learning goals.

All in all, I believe that by implementing the ISTE Standards for students, I will be providing a pathway for their voice, choice, and empowerment to achieve their educational goals, accompanied and enhanced by technology. EdTech is nothing without the "ed" and the ISTE Standards will help me to stay laser focused on outcomes for students.
