Week 3 Assignment # 3 CAST UDL

Part 2

Lesson link: http://lessonbuilder.cast.org/explore.php?op=static&pid=rocks_1

Lesson Title: Rocks and Their Properties: Day 1

Who
The lesson I chose from the CAST UDL website is a 3rd-5th grade science lesson that is designed to engage students in cooperative research projects with the end result of learning about the properties of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks and the processes that form them. The lesson is well designed with a variety of options for students to communicate their new knowledge through a variety of platforms ( written, oral, or visual presentation, explanations, word process) and maximize their performance.

What
Upon delving into the lesson, it became evident to me that the students will explore samples of the three rock types, share their findings, and determine what other types of information they will need as they further their study of rocks. The lesson is aligned with the Massachusetts State Standards for Science and Technology/Engineering, Strand 1: Earth and Space Science and comprises of unit. Furthermore, the lesson goals are broken up into unit goals and lesson goals. I really lived the engagement activity('thumb's up–thumb's down') that was used to arouse students' curiosity and heighten their expectations about what they will learn about rocks.

How
Because the lesson is in its initial stage, only formative assessments will be used to check students understanding and clear up any misconceptions. Whole class instruction, small group , think pair and share will be used to identify students who may seem confused and may need more guidance over the next few days as the lesson progresses.
